Wedged in by week’s end
Dec 26, 2024
2024 has under a week left in the tank, and temperatures will be running out of gas as we head into the final weekend of the year. Clouds will increase throughout this Thursday as northeasterly winds filter into the Carolinas ahead of moisture arriving from the southwest. Highs will top out in the 40s and 50s despite the mostly cloudy skies by sunset. Most communities will remain dry through midnight, although shower chances begin to pick up by Friday morning. While our Friday won’t be a washout, it certainly won’t be a pleasant day either. Afternoon temperatures will be lucky to top out much above 40° in the Metro as a winter wedge makes itself at home to close out the week.
Temperatures will rise into the weekend, but so too will rain chances. Scattered showers continue through Saturday; medium-range models are suggesting the wettest period over the next five days arrives between Saturday night and Sunday morning. A few thunderstorms may also develop on Sunday as an energized disturbances marches through the Carolinas. Despite the rain and storms, highs should reach into the 60s across the Piedmont and Foothills to close out the weekend. Most locations will see 1-2″ through Sunday evening, with the potential for over 3″ in localized amounts in the High Country. The final stretch of 2024 appears dry and relatively warm with highs in the 50s and 60s next Monday and Tuesday.
