The Cleveland Guardians' High-A affiliate, which boasted a 77-53 record, last won the crown in 2010.
Recently established by the Lake County commissioners, Key to the County will continue to stand, according to the board, as the “community’s highest honor and most prestigious award,” given very selectively to an individual or organization that has made extraordinary and significant contributions to Lake County.
Additionally, the Key to Lake County will only be awarded after unanimous consent of the commissioners.
In September, the Captains triumphed 9-4 over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, concluding a three-game series and ultimately securing a second franchise championship.
“Through this program, we celebrate not just the impressive championship victory of the Lake County Captains, but the spirit of our entire community that rallied behind them,” said Commissioner John Plecnik. “Their win represents our shared pride and determination, making them more than deserving of the Key to Lake County.”
Commissioner John Hamercheck echoed his colleague, adding, “....we proudly honor the Captains’ commitment to excellence and their vital role in enriching our community….their success is a reflection of the support from our fans and all of Lake County, and we look forward to many more seasons of shared victories.”
Commissioner Richard Regovich said the players, management, front office and ownership exemplify the values of teamwork, dedication and excellence.
“This Key to Lake County is a testament to their extraordinary achievements and an inspiration for every resident of Lake County,” he added. “The Captains lost 13 players throughout the year and to still be able to do what they did proves how hard it is to win in this league.”
The positive news doesn’t end with the board’s recognition, as the Captains were recently named the “2024 Minor League Baseball Team of the Year” by “Baseball America.”
Additionally, General Manager Jen Yorko was recognized as MiLB’s High-A Executive of the Year.
Under her leadership, the Captains have seen “substantial growth” in attendance and social engagement, leading High-A baseball in social media interaction.”
Moreover, Yorko is the first female GM to win a MiLB championship.
“It is truly an honor to receive the key to the county, graciously presented to our team by the commissioners and I’m proud to be a part of it,” she said. “Sharing the excitement of our Midwest League Championship with the entire Lake County community and our dedicated fan base has been an unforgettable experience.
“Working alongside the Cleveland Guardians and leading such a talented front office team has been a rewarding experience,” Yorko added. “The talent on the field and in the executive team is second to none. We can’t wait to welcome our amazing fans back to Classic Auto Group Park for Opening Night on April 8. It’s going to be a night full of exciting celebrations and unforgettable moments for everyone.”
