HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is alerting drivers to expect potential delays near King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani on Monday, Dec. 30, as crews install two speed tables on Haleakala Highway (Route 377). Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The installation, set to take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., will occur near the rear entrance of the school. Since the school is on winter break, the construction should have minimal impact on students. However, one lane in each direction will be closed during the project, which spans about 1,000 feet. Traffic will be maintained through alternating lane closures, with crews directing the flow. The agency has responded to community concerns about speeding by installing traffic-calming devices such as raised crosswalks, speed tables, and speed humps to encourage drivers to slow down. Retailers prepping for busy New Year’s Eve fireworks sales HDOT has already implemented 255 of these vertical deflections statewide, including 18 in Maui County this year. The first raised crosswalk, installed in Kalihi on Oahu in 2019, marked the beginning of this initiative. Safety improvements from these installations have been significant, particularly on Oahu, where studies show a 74% reduction in total crashes, a 59% decrease in speeding, a 71% drop in pedestrian-involved accidents, and a remarkable 92% reduction in fatalities.
