I70 traffic impacted by heavy snow: 'Best option is to stay in Denver'
Dec 25, 2024
DENVER (KDVR) — Heavy mountain snow made for challenging road conditions in Colorado's Rocky Mountain passes on Christmas day, resulting in a closure of Interstate 70 near Georgetown.
According to the Colorado State Patrol in Golden, the roadway was closed for some time as crews worked to clear multiple spin-outs, slide-offs and crashes.
The road reopened westbound at Georgetown and also reopened eastbound at the Eisenhower Tunnel after a crash was cleared from the roadway. As of 6:30 p.m., traffic was moving slowly on I-70 in both directions.
CSP warned motorists that the roadway remained slushy, and asked for slow speeds.
"Best option is to stay in Denver," the CSP troop stated on X. "Clear Creek County has very limited lodging and parking."
Nearby, U.S. 40 north of Winter Park and Fraser was closed due to a crash as of about 6 p.m. The Colorado Department of Transportation had established a detour on County Road 5 while the crash was cleared. The Grand County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday night that the crash was a head-on collision with multiple injuries.
As of 4 p.m., the passenger vehicle traction law and commercial vehicle chain laws were in full effect. CSP told motorists to expect traffic holds at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel while the Colorado Department of Transportation cleared I-70 from Georgetown to the Eisenhower Tunnel.
At about 10 p.m., CSP Golden said that I-70 was reopened in both directions through the mountains. The agency said that it was snowing on Vail pass, which had prompted the continuation of the Passenger Vehicle Traction Laws between Copper Mountain and Vail.
Additionally, the unit said that U.S. 6 was closed at the Loveland pass for snow removal, and hazmat was staging at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel for hourly passages.
