Toy safety warnings highlight holiday gift hazards
Dec 25, 2024
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - It's Christmas which means many children will be receiving some of their favorite toys and several other gifts, but some may come with dangers.
It's finally Christmas and children are opening their gifts and getting new toys to play with. But while this is a fun exciting time, some toys can be dangerous for children.
Studies have shown that toys are one of the leading causes of injuries involving children, especially those under four years old. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 10 children die each year due to toy-related accidents and just last year, more than 150 children were treated in emergency rooms.
This being something that families want to avoid not only during the holidays but on a regular day as well.
In the 2024 fiscal year--- CPSC joined together with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to seize more than 1.5 million dangerous or illegal toys. Nearly 102,000 of those toys were seized because lead was found in them. Now some toys can often come with a lithium coin battery and this can be a choking hazard for children that can result in chemical burns, poisoning, and even death.
So to protect your children this holiday season-- be sure to check the age group and other safety information on the toy packaging. Try to choose toys that match your child's abilities.
Safety officials also say you should keep small balls and toys with small toy pieces away from children younger than age 3. And do not have deflated balloons near children under the age of 8.
Last but not least--- once those gifts are opened today, get rid of the wrapping and packaging on the toys.
