FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Reenae Lane said it was a 'happy little coincidence' that the dog she had met only a few days earlier would spend Christmas morning in her home. Lane would typically be spending the holidays with her two sons. But, with her family working through the holidays, she decided that this year's Christmas may be better spent fostering a furry friend for the first time. Enter Ducky, a five-year-old Pitbull mix who, by coincidence, Lane had taken to the Fantasy of Lights drive-through just a few days earlier while volunteering at the shelter. The two have been catching up like old friends all day with car rides through the neighborhood to snacking on ducky's favorite food, peanut butter and ready whip. When they're not active, or hungry, the pair can be found snuggled on the couch. "We've actually been spending the morning watching football and I did some knitting with him on my lap," Lane said. "He's just been great company. It's been very nice to have Ducky with me, otherwise, I would've been alone this morning, so he kept me company and waited on Santa with me." Ducky is not the only one getting the VIP treatment. He is one of four dogs doing Humane Fort Wayne's Holiday Rovernights, a program that provides a short-term foster opportunity for community members during the holiday season. Volunteers picked up their foster pup, along with some their food and crate, on Christmas Eve.The dogs are then whisked away to their new homes, where they will stay for a few days. This program goes beyond treating the dogs to a memorable holiday. Allison Caley, animal care and intake manager, said Holiday Rovernight families report back to the shelter how the dog handled time outside, meeting other pets and playing with kids. This information helps families looking to adopt shelter pups know more about their potential pet. Getting these dogs out of a noisy and lonely kennel also improves their mental health. "It helps relieve some of the stress and decompress, and get a feel for what a true home experience is for that animal," Caley said. Humane Fort Wayne has ongoing foster opportunities for dogs and cats of all ages. Visit the shelter's website to learn more about the foster program. The shelter and its clinic are closed on Christmas day.
