When do North Dakotans start drinking on Christmas?
Dec 25, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — While many enjoy exchanging presents and eating turkey on Christmas, some prefer to indulge in a drink or two.
Talker Researcher with Newsweek conducted a poll that shows what time many people start drinking on the holiday.
The poll asked 1,000 adults what time they swap water for their first alcoholic drink, and while 11% start drinking between 2-6 p.m., others start earlier: some before 8 a.m. and other between 8-10 a.m.
However, 45% of people say they don't drink at all during the Christmas holiday.
The results also showed that men are more likely to open the drink cabinet early in the morning. Women prefer their first drink to be between 4-6 p.m, while men start between 12-2 p.m.
Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) start their drinking early, with a small percentage starting before 8 a.m. and a few more starting before 10 a.m.
However, no one from the Silent Generation (born between 1928 and 1945) choose to drink before midday. And Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012) will have their first sometime between 4-6 p.m.

While drinking in the morning is usually discouraged, some people see Christmas Day to be an exception.
Etiquette expert and lifestyle consultant, Jo Hayes, said that people should be cautious and recommends to not drink before midday.
"While pre-midday drinks (in moderate consumption) may be permissible for special events, such as Christmas, this is not a healthy lifestyle practice," Hayes said. "Pre-midday drinking increase the [risk] of overindulging, with the more time in the day to continue drinking, compared with starting in the afternoon or evening."
Hayes added that she's "regularly amazed" to see people having a drink in the morning, those people are usually found in airports.
Since Christmas is a celebratory atmosphere that allows people to indulge in habits they don't usually follow, the festivities can cause people "to turn to alcohol to dull their pain."
People should know and respect their limits, no matter what day it is.
"People have different limits for what they can handle, and wise people know their limits. I would suggest people err on the side of caution and stick to one or two drinks on Christmas day," Hayes said. "Choose light beers and lower alcoholic wines or champagnes. Drink plenty of water in between and ensure you don't eat on an empty stomach."
