Hammond man accused of shooting brotherinlaw, stealing his gun

A Hammond man is accused of battering and shooting his brother-in-law before fleeing with his firearm.
Victor Lavelle Isom, 54, is charged with two felony counts of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and theft, a Level 5 felony.
On Oct. 22, Hammond Police responded to a possible shooting in the rear of a residence in the 800 block of Bauer Street, according to the probable cause affidavit. Upon arrival, the victim, a 46-year-old man, was in an ambulance due to his injuries and was taken to Community Hospital.
Two women were distraught at the scene and told police that Isom Jr. was on the porch with them when he said he needed to speak with Morgan and return his tools, court records state. Isom was allowed to enter the house but a short time later, he came running out with the victim’s firearm. The victim was found bloodied and unconscious inside the house after he was shot, records state.
Police spoke to Morgan, whose lip was broken and bloodied and face was swollen, at the hospital. He said Isom was married to his sister-in-law, the affidavit states. Isom and he were in the house when Isom started talking and “cold-cocked” him. The victim said he lost consciousness and the next thing he remembered was waking up in an ambulance, court records state.
A home security video showed that a man had come to the house and tried to open the side door. His face matched that of Isom, records state.
