RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A family is mourning the Christmas Eve death of their 15-year-old Husky after the dog was shot and killed when it "charged" at a Raleigh police officer hours earlier.
The southeast Raleigh incident happened after police were sent around 5:45 p.m. to the 3900 block of Alder Grove Lane to follow-up on a stolen car investigation, according to Raleigh Police Department Lt. Jason Borneo.
After police had been at the scene in the Battle Ridge neighborhood, "an aggressive dog charged at an officer and the officer discharged his weapon, striking the dog. Unfortunately, the dog died," Borneo told CBS 17.

Christmas Eve after 7 p.m., a woman was visibly upset and crying at the shooting scene, which is in a neighborhood off Battle Bridge Road.
"This is not the result we want especially on Christmas Eve," Borneo said about the shooting.
A family told CBS 17 that the dog killed was their 15-year-old Husky, Maxi.

The dog's owner heard gunshots around 6 p.m. and came out to find the dog dead.
The family said Maxi is trained and often goes outside alone without any problems.
Borneo said police are working with the family who owned the dog.
The officer involved could face disciplinary action following an internal investigation into the matter, according to Borneo.
