RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – A Rio Rancho family is picking up the pieces after vandals destroyed the memorial for a teen killed in October. The family of 15-year-old Adrian Maestas cleaned up broken glass, placed new holiday decorations and luminarias at the foot of his memorial. But they said Christmas will never be the same. "He loves his family, he loved his friends, and he didn't deserve any of this at all,” said Darcy Romero, Adrian Maestas’ mother. "Everything you could tell had been stomped on, smashed, thrown, kicked. There was just glass everywhere,” said Romero. Neighbors told the family about the destruction Monday night, so they went to check it out. "It was kind of hard to see, so when I initially started picking up the glass, I did cut my hand. That's when I realized it wasn't the wind. This stuff's actually broken,” said Romero. On Tuesday, family members redecorated the memorial near Inca and rainbow in Rio rancho. While Romero is hurt by the vandalism, she said it wasn't surprising, "With what we're dealing with, it was expected." Police said the 15-year-old was shot in the head on October 30 during a shootout between a group who met to resolve an ongoing dispute. He died from his injuries two days later, but Romero said his memory remains alive. "He was a beautiful boy. He is still a beautiful soul and he's still here with us because that's how big his heart was,” said Romero. They restored the memorial and promised to continue honoring him. "No matter how many times they do this, we're going to be right here, pick up the pieces, and put it back together for Adrian,” said Romero. Romero said she filed a police report and is in contact with the Rio Rancho Police Department. KRQE News 13 reached out to RRPD for an update and have not heard back yet.
