A storm brings snow and rain on Christmas Day
Dec 24, 2024
A storm will bring light rain and snow to parts of New Mexico on Christmas Day. Temperatures will also be cooler for the rest of the week.
High temperatures across New Mexico this Christmas Eve are sitting slightly cooler than yesterday behind a weak cold front. Despite the cooler air, it's been yet another above-average day temperature-wise. This quiet weather briefly gets disrupted Christmas Day as a fast-moving storm moves into New Mexico.
A few spotty rain and mountain snow showers will move into northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado overnight tonight, but most of the precipitation with the Christmas Day storm system won't move into western New Mexico until late in the morning. The rain and mountain snow will move east across the state through the evening, bringing rain chances in the Albuquerque Metro by the mid to late afternoon, and light snow to areas above 8,5000' in western, central, and northern New Mexico. By Christmas night, western New Mexico will see drier weather return, while spotty showers and light snow will move into eastern half of the state. Snow levels may briefly drop down to as low as 7,000' overnight, but accumulations will be light to none. A few lingering showers may stick around through Thursday morning in far eastern New Mexico, but the rest of the state will see drier and clearer skies. Temperatures on Christmas Day will still be mild for most of New Mexico, despite a cold front sweeping across the state through the day. Winds will be breezy though, and could gust as high as 35 to 45 mph before dying down Christmas night.
Thursday will see drier air through the afternoon, along with cooler temperatures. Another round of spotty showers and light snow will move through northern New Mexico late Thursday night into very early Friday morning, but again, any accumulations will be very light.
Cooler air sticks around northern New Mexico on Friday, while the rest of the state will begin a warming trend. Warmer weather returns statewide on Saturday as this warming trend continues into early next week when highs will once again be well-above average for the end of December.
