BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The holiday season can be a challenging time for many seniors, especially those who find themselves spending it alone. However, the Burleigh County Senior Center is working tirelessly to ensure local seniors feel connected and cared for this time of year. The center offers a variety of meal services to meet different needs. Seniors can enjoy hot meals in the dining room or pick up drive-thru meals during the week, and home-delivered or frozen options are available for those who can’t make it to the center. Most importantly, these services are accessible to everyone, regardless of financial ability. “We try to provide everything on a donation basis," states the center's Executive Director, Renee Kipp. "All of our meals are donations. Whenever you’re willing or able to donate, it's the same with our health maintenance services, and then with our art classes and some of the other things.” None of this would be possible without the dedication of the center’s volunteers. They deliver meals and assist with activities, even during harsh weather conditions. “They come through when we need it most,” says Kipp. “Sometimes it’s 25 below, and the wind is blowing, and it’s cold out, and they show up with a smile on their face, ready to go.” In addition to meals and activities, the center provides medical pedicures. These appointments go beyond the basics of foot care, as nurses look for early signs of infection or other health concerns. How frequent are festive fires in North Dakota? “A lot of times, if you’re having health issues, the first place you see it is in your feet,” explains Kipp. “Our nurses help those people take care of all that.” The Burleigh County Senior Center isn’t just about meals and health services—it’s also a hub for fun and connection. From weekly activities like cornhole tournaments to Friday afternoon movie screenings, there’s always something to look forward to. “We’ll be here at eight o’clock," Kipp concludes. "We’ve got some fun things on the activity calendar. Just stop down.” For seniors in Bismarck and Lincoln who need help getting to the center, a shuttle service is also available year-round.
