Weather Forecast: White Christmas on the way!
Dec 24, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A limited lake response will keep a few light snow showers in the air as Santa pays us a visit tonight. No impact to roads are expected, so simply a story of ambiance snowfall. With several inches still on the ground for many, we'll be able to satisfy "White Christmas" criteria by morning.
With 4" of snow officially still on the ground at the Rochester Airport as of this morning, it seems our "White Christmas 2024" is a lock. Historically, Rochester has at least 1" of snow on the ground Christmas morning slightly better than 50% of the time. pic.twitter.com/6Tk3HpR7aR— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) December 24, 2024
No fresh snow will fall during Christmas Day. Clouds are expected to dominate our skies as temperatures rise into the low to mid 30s. Overall, it will be a mild day compared to the days prior.
By definition, a "White Christmas" requires at least 1" of snow on the ground at 7am Christmas morning. Most of the time, this is reasonably representative. But it does open the door for a few odd quirks (and I'm all about odd quirks). For example...1. Christmas Day is 70° and… pic.twitter.com/0uIY3vTVm2— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) December 23, 2024
Clouds are expected to stick around throughout much of the rest of the week. Mostly cloudy skies are expected for Thursday with some clouds moving out of the area for Friday. Temperatures will start to slowly climb their way back up to average for this time of the year. There may still be some snow left on the ground at the end of the week, but I doubt that there will be any left by the end of the weekend.
We will remain dry for the first half of the weekend as temperatures skyrocket into the 40s for highs. Rain is expected to move into the area for Sunday. However, temperatures will stay on the warmer side, expected to reach the mid to upper 40s for highs.
Scattered showers are expected to stay in the area through the beginning of next week. Temperatures seem like they want to stay on the warmer side. We will ring in the new year on the warmer side. What comes after, though: maybe another cooldown.
