ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Rochester's Open Door Mission is working extra hard to ensure the warmth and safety of individuals facing homelessness in the community ahead of the holidays. The nonprofit Christian rescue services unhoused individuals, providing spiritual and physical help to those in the Rochester community in need of help. For Christmas this year, officials said they're providing essential items like food, clothes, winter gear and a place to stay. "We try to make it celebratory. We decorate our facility; we ensure that everyone who's in our programs has some sort of gift or present to open. We definitely remind them, share the gospel with them, share the message of the Christmas story, make sure that everyone who needs a place has a place to stay with us or somewhere where we can place them," said CEO Anna Valeria on Christmas Eve. ‘Operation Caring Hearts’ brings Christmas joy to homeless community In 2023, Open Door Mission collected over 300,000 pounds of clothing and over 500,000 pounds of food.
