SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The City of Springfield Department of Public Works is reminding residents that there will be no trash or recycle pick up on Christmas and New Years Day. The holiday season is in full swing which means several businesses will be closed and some services will be put on pause for Christmas and New Years day. Those services include the collection of trash, yard waste, recycling, or bulk item materials. So if you have some items to dispose of -- prepare to wait a few days. Those residents who are normally scheduled for trash, recycling and yard waste on Wednesday, December 25th will have their items picked up on Saturday, December 28, 2024. And those scheduled for collection on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 will have their picked up on Saturday, January 4, 2025. And when that time comes--- The Solid Waste Division says residents should remember to place their items on the curb by 6:00 a.m. If you are trying to get rid of your Christmas tree--- the DPW will start collecting them on January 7th through the 31st on your scheduled recycling day. But keep in mind that all decorations removed and must be placed in an accessible location on the tree belt. You also want to avoid wrapping the tree in plastic bags. And in the case that it snows-- be sure that the trees are not covered or buried in snow and that they are accessible for your local DPW.
