SAVANNAH, Ga (WSAV) -- ‘Twas the day before Christmas and Old Savannah City Mission (OSCM) is prepping to give back to their friends and neighbors who are in need of a hot holiday meal or Christmas presents.
“We start prepping usually a week before Christmas, we start prepping,” program director, Jermaine Ray said. “It's a lot to do. Like I said, as far as getting breakfast prepared for a 150 to 200 individuals and then turn around and doing the same thing for lunch.”
Ray said the annual Christmas breakfast and dinner is expected to draw in more people compared to last year. Thanks to community donations, the non-profit is able to provide a hearty holiday menu, and they will have more than enough hands to serve those in need.
“We have some military individuals that are in town that wasn't able to get home for the holidays,” Ray said. “Also, just our family members in town that wanted to spend time with their family, but they still wanted to participate in giving back to the community.”
As part of their annual holiday tradition, they will be giving away toys. In 2023, they served around 80 children. This year they are expecting that number to rise.
“We're still taking donations, you know, and whatever donations as far as the toys, if we do have any toys left over what we do is we donate them to the police department, and they go around and also give out toys to families in need,” Ray said.
He continued, “We want to really say thank you. This year, they made it a big, giant event for us. We want to just tell our community that all around the city mission. thank you and have a blessed and Merry Christmas.”
Old Savannah City Mission will host their toy giveaway starting tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon, their Christmas breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., and Christmas dinner from 3 to 5 p.m.
