Spend Christmas with the critters at Swineknot Animal Sanctuary

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Sixty pigs, four equines, a dozen peacocks and thousands of holiday lights! Merging holiday celebrations and farm operations comes naturally for Holly Torres, owner of Swine Knot Animal Sanctuary.
Torres and her husband are lighting up their farm for the fifth year of "Christmas with the Critters." The annual event celebrates the couple’s “love for animals” and allows them to share it with the community.
Swine Knot Animal Sanctuary takes in animals that are forced out of their homes, in danger or sick. Torres says their focus remains on pigs because she feels that they have a greater need.
“We have been able to help several families with difficult situations,” Torres said. “We have a pig here [whose family] was a victim of a house fire so we’re keeping their pig for them while their house is being rebuilt.”

The farm has about 60 pot-belly pigs at any given time as well as goats, sheep, alpacas, horses, chickens, ducks, peacocks, turkeys and more. The animals are adopted out which Torres says allows the sanctuary to stay sustainable.
From being given clever names, like “Hog-en-Dazs," to spending winter months in their own heated outdoor homes, the animals are given the Torres family treatment.
In total, the farm has about 100 animals at any given time.
During the holiday event, Torres says the pigs and horses get dressed up in lights and outfits. Guests are told to expect friendly animals and a “great experience.”
