HONOLULU (KHON2) --There is an elementary school in Nuuanu that is the "OG" as they say. More than 15 years ago, they were the first to support children in need through our Laulima Giving Program and have inspired other schools to do the same. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news Students piled in line after line at Maemae Elementary School to drop off new donated gifts as they walked to their annual Laulima Day assembly. They brought gift such as Play-Doh boxes, reindeer cookies, various toys and other goodies. Ewa Beach 1st graders learn value of laulima "The kids look forward to it. Our third graders go out, they do their chores at home they collect money and they go down to the store to purchase items for this, but it expanded right, it expanded to the whole school," explained Principal Lenn Uyeda. According to fifth grader Bailey Finch, Laulima Day helps keiki learn kindness, giving and spreading aloha. Wyllie Street Band welcomed everyone as they gathered under the monkeypox tree. "I really wanted to thank everyone for the donations. You folks have shown right up there, that you folks care for others, so give yourselves a big round of applause for that," Principal Ueda said during the assembly. Because of what Maemae started years ago, the Laulima Giving Program now has five elementary schools who are doing the same thing. Hawaiian Santa was the star of the day in the eyes of the children. But for the Laulima Giving Program, the children are the stars, helping send the message to children they've never met that they care. "I wish everybody in Hawai'i has a good Christmas and they get all the presents and just have a wonderful Christmas," said fourth grader Porter Ogino.
