Drier today, but Christmas snow in northern New Mexico
Dec 24, 2024
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Localized light rain showers with wet snow flurries are falling across Northern New Mexico, as well as eastern areas with patchy fog, but most of the dissipating precipitation moving to the southeast is not even reaching the ground because of dry-enough air lingering beneath the clouds as temperatures are starting off relatively mild but lower for most with some of the clouds absorbing infrared radiation from escaping into space, but with northerly winds allowing for the colder air mass in the northern three-fourths of the region. Air temperatures are in the teens, 20s, 30s, and lower 40s from north-northwest to south-southeast from high to lower elevation, but some of that cooler air is settling down to some of the valley floors.

Other than some lingering low-level clouds in Southeast New Mexico, with some decks of mid-to-high-level clouds moving mostly to the southeast later this afternoon with northwesterly winds, although mostly light, drying things out later today, the dry enough air will lead to hardly any precipitation because of a ridge of high pressure to the southwest. High temperatures will either be close to or slightly lower for a few areas than yesterday, except for much lower high temperatures in the Pecos River Valley, but highs will still be above normal for nearly all. Throughout the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the upper 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and near the low 70s from north-northeast to south-southwest.
Moisture with colder air will then arrive with the jet stream diving just enough southward on Christmas with a gustier low-pressure system, which will elevate the fire threat with some blowing snow, as well as more widespread dust, which is likely to bring some snow in the Northern Mountains, with mixed precipitation slightly farther to the south possible.
