FAA: American Airlines ground stop lifted after nationwide 'technical issue'
Dec 24, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A nationwide ground stop for all American Airlines flights was issued Tuesday morning due to a "technical issue," but has since been lifted, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA ordered the halt after American Airlines reported a system-wide problem in a social media post on X.
"Your safety is our utmost priority, once this is rectified, we'll have you safely on your way to your destination," the airline said during the disruption.
While no formal press release was issued, American Airlines responded to customer inquiries on social media, stating they did not have an "estimated timeframe" earlier but were "working to fix it in the shortest possible time."
"We're doing our best to get things back on track. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this has caused," the airline added in another post.
In an email to customers just before 11 a.m., American Airlines confirmed, "We have resolved a vendor technology issue that briefly affected flights this morning."
"It’s all hands on deck as our team is working diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible," the company added.
To provide additional flexibility, the airline issued a travel alert, allowing customers traveling on Dec. 24 to rebook without fees, cancel or receive a refund.
The disruption came on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest travel days of the year, affecting millions of holiday travelers.
