MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man was shot to death at a gas station in Frayser early Tuesday morning, according to Memphis Police.
A little after 2 a.m., officers say they responded to a shooting call at the Valero gas station on 2644 North Hollywood Street.
A man was found suffering from a gunshot wound and later pronounced dead.
Witnesses say that the shooting was between two best friends, with one killing the other after getting gas, but this has not been confirmed by police.
Attempted murder charge for teen in Bojangles shootout
Earlier, at least 20 residents, mostly young adults and teenagers, had gathered near the scene. Many were emotional, with some in tears and others looking on in concern.
"Police don’t care about Frayser. They don’t. We’ve had so much crime out here, it’s ridiculous. There are so many shootings out here daily. You would be shocked,” a store owner said.
According to a woman who works nearby, the ongoing crime in the city stems from the police force not prioritizing this area. She noted that a lack of police cameras in the neighborhood contributes to the persistence of crime.
“There’s only about two spot cams out here that’s over there on Walkins and that’s it around this area. There’s none, there’s none. They don’t give a d*** they don’t care about this community," she said. "You show me where a Starbucks is in Frayser. You show me where there are things for these teenagers to do out here.”
It is still unclear at this time who pulled the trigger.
“That’s horrible you’re supposed to be celebrating this time of year, and now you have a death in the family that’s really sad. It's sad any day of the year that you have to deal with death. It’s really sad during this time,” said Taurus Fleming, a Memphis resident.
He said it was disturbing to see so many young people gathered near the scene instead of resting at home. He expressed disappointment with the lack of guidance they're receiving from their parents.
"Back when I was growing up, we weren’t out at 2-3 o’clock in the morning," he said. "We had to be in the house when it’s dark. These days kids have no guidance. Their parents aren’t teaching them.”
Fleming also says people need to learn how to deal with disagreements without using guns.
"It’s a lot of jealousy growing going on. I heard the young man that got killed, his partner supposed to killed him. That’s what the young lady in the store just said. That's sad that you can’t get along. It’s just pitiful,” he said.
