Two injured after house, vacant building catch fire in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Fire Department reported two fires, one at a home Monday night, and another at a vacant building early Tuesday morning, that left two people hospitalized.
According to KCFD, just after 6:30 p.m. Monday, crews responded to a house fire near West 58th Street and Ward Parkway.

Upon arrival, KCFD reported heavy smoke coming from the two-story home, leading crews to utilize multiple handlines to get the fire under control.
After the fire was put out, the home was searched and came back clear. However, one victim, a man in his late 20s, was taken to a hospital with significant burns. KCFD said he had been trying to put the fire out when he got injured.
Currently, the man is still in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and KCFD is investigating the cause of the fire.
Not long after, at about 2:15 a.m. on Christmas Eve, Kansas City fire crews responded to another fire at a vacant building near Independence and Virginia Avenues.

KCFD said a previous burn had caused the fire and that one homeless person had been injured and taken to a hospital.
The victim's current status is unknown, according to KCFD, and dangerous buildings was ordered.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
