Indiana State Police: 1 dead after shooting by Cass County deputy in Carroll County

CASS COUNTY, Ind. -- Deputies with the Cass County Sheriff's Office were involved in a shooting early Tuesday morning that killed one person.
According to officials with the Indiana State Police, deputies from the Cass County Sheriff's Office responded to a scene at around 12:23 a.m.. Tuesday where two people had reportedly been stabbed.
While deputies from Cass County responded to the scene, the incident occurred in the 3000 block of W. County Road 500 S, which is in Carroll County.

According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, deputies discovered one victim when they arrived at the scene. Deputies on scene spotted a man, later identified as 35-year-old Christopher Evans from Logansport, who was armed with knives.
"The deputy issued several commands to... Evans, but he failed to comply, leading to an altercation," the release said. "...Evans charged at the deputy, who retreated into an adjacent field. The deputy subsequently discharged their weapon, striking... Evans at least once."
Evans was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. One victim remains in critical, but stable, condition while the other victim's injuries are not considered life threatening.
The release said that no deputies were injured during the incident. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. Officials said the Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Carroll County Coroner's Office and the Carroll County Prosecutor's Office.
The incident continues to be under investigation, the release said.
