MINOT, N.D. (KXNET) — The Minot Housing Authority aims to help those in need of a home with its latest project, which looks to construct two 36-unit apartment complexes in the North Hill neighborhood. The apartments that will be located in Engle Court are currently in the design phase, with phase one beginning next year, and phase two starting next fall. While the housing authority hopes to break ground in August once a bid is awarded to a contractor, Tom Alexander — the Minot Housing Authority's Executive Director — says that there have been many factors that the housing authority has had to consider with the design of the apartments ever since the idea for the units was first established in 2020. "What does the state have?" asks Alexander. "And what does the federal government have in terms of programs that we can apply for to put a project together? Is there land available?" Alexander says that as North Hill has started to grow, the apartments are needed to keep up with population growth — especially after the addition of a new school this past year. "There's a lot going on with North Hill," Alexander continues. "You can see that with businesses, banks, restaurants, and those kinds of things." Said Tom Alexander Alexander says that the apartments are both high-quality and community-centered — but that in in both phases of the project, he plans on saving some of the apartments for certain people. GALLERY: Winter at the Dakota Zoo "It's a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments with amenities and garages," he adds. "we're also hoping to have a dog park and those kinds of things with the project. We're designating 8 units to support the homeless folks who are chronically homeless, and we'll plan on doing that for phase 2." The Engle Court Apartments are being named after the woman who spearheaded the project originally — and to her, the cost of the project would have been worth it. "Engle Court 1 and 2 is named after the longtime board member that we had with Minot Housing authority that passed away March of 2022," Alexander concludes. "She was a very strong supporter of affordable housing, and was pretty excited for this project to move forward." In total, the apartment complex will cost between $15 to $18 million to build. The Minot Housing Authority projects construction will be finished in the fall of 2026. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
