Lisa Lisa ready to bring 'joy and nostalgia' to 2025
Dec 23, 2024
Lisa Lisa, who helped define the sound of the ‘80s with her group Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, is celebrating 40 years since the release of her groundbreaking hit, I Wonder If I Take You Home.
Lisa recounted sneaking into a club as a teenager to meet Mike Cues of Cult Jam.
“A friend told me about this audition for female singers. I skipped school, snuck into the Fun House, and auditioned in a Brooklyn basement," she recalled. "I was petrified, but I sang my heart out—and got the part."
Her love for music was cultivated early in life. She started singing in a church choir at age five.
“My mom gave me my first solo at six, and seeing her reaction made me realize this was what I wanted to do," she said. “Everything we did at home was to music—salsa, Motown, you name it. Music is life to me. It’s how I speak to the world.”

Now celebrating four decades in music, Lisa Lisa attributes her enduring career to caring for her voice and staying connected to her audience.
“I drink a lot of water, get good sleep, and avoid drinking and smoking,” she explained. “When I’m on stage, the energy from the audience is everything. It’s life—it’s my blood flow.”
Her performances reflect the decade Lisa Lisa made a massive impact on the culture: the 1980s.
“When you see me live, you’ll get all the hits. I want to take you back—to the shell-toe Adidas, linoleum dance floors, and big earrings. It’s all about nostalgia.”
2025 is set to be an exciting year for Lisa Lisa, with plans in motion for new music, a memoir, and a 40-city tour. With those developments ahead, Lisa said she wants people to hear the love she puts into her music.
“I want to bring joy and nostalgia," she said. "I want young girls—especially Latina girls—to know they can make it too.”
