FORECAST: DMV First Warn Tuesday morning, then clearing by afternoon
Dec 23, 2024
Tonight, the area will see an increase in clouds, but it looks to remain dry until the early morning hours of Tuesday morning. A cold front and a retreating cold airmass will work to bring a threat of light snow/freezing rain/ice to parts of the DMV for the Tuesday morning commute, as the thermometer holds in the 20s.
Regarding the timing of the wintry weather, the light precipitation is scheduled to move into the Appalachian Mountains between 3 and 5 am. As the cold pushes east throughout the morning, the light band of precipitation will go closer to the I-81 corridor between roughly 5 and 6 am, eventually reaching the D.C. area around 8–9 am. Temperatures will support freezing rain/ice as the primary precipitation type, with a brief period of snow at the onset over the mountains before a changeover to freezing rain. As a result, the National Weather Service has a Winter Weather Advisory in place for many counties in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and D.C., from 5 am until 1 pm on Christmas Eve morning. With freezing temperatures in the few days leading up to this, surfaces like roads and sidewalks will be cold, so even light precipitation should freeze/stick, creating slick and icy conditions. Even light amounts of ice can create hazardous travel conditions. All precipitation begins to dissipate around noon or change to very light plain rain as temps rise above freezing before ending mid-afternoon.
Dry conditions are forecast for Christmas Day as another weak wave approaches Wednesday night and crosses parts of the area early Thursday. Spotty light precipitation across northern and western Maryland into eastern West Virginia and even NW Virginia, but the chances of it happening are low. There is a much better chance of seeing inclement weather late Friday and into the weekend.
Some light precipitation is possible on Saturday, but with temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, most locations will see light rain scattered throughout the morning and into the afternoon. Sunday, the bulk of a storm system crosses the region, bringing more widespread precipitation. Rain is expected for much of the area on Sunday, but the question is, how much? Since the temperatures will continue to rise and be in the 50s, all areas in the DMV will see rain and, at times, some moderate to heavy rain.
