CHP to initiate maximum enforcement Christmas Eve
Dec 23, 2024
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - As millions hit the road to visit loved ones, CHP is preparing to initiate maximum enforcement Tuesday.
“All of our available officers are going to be out there on patrol looking for those in need of assistance, and we're definitely looking for those who are driving impaired,” CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said.
Salas says Dec. 23 thought 24, are some of the most dangerous days to drive.
“From Thanksgiving leading on to New Year's is really our main focus on impaired driving. And definitely we are seeing a peak in that activity… And we're also seeing an increase in traffic collisions as a result of impaired driving,” Salas said.
So, as many people leave holiday parties or bars this week, Salas has one message: be sober or get pulled over.
“In this day and age, there is zero reason why you cannot make it home from that establishment, wherever you are, in a safe manner. There's so many rideshare programs, there's so many different ways to get a safe ride home,” Salas said.
Police arrest a lot of impaired drivers this time of year, but impaired driving is not the only contributor to increased crashes. Salas also blames increased traffic.
According to AAA, 14 million Californians will drive at least 50 miles this week. They account for 90% of those traveling.
“AAA is expecting record number of travelers this coming week. This holiday is going to mirror 2019 travel numbers we haven't seen since the beginning of the pandemic,” AAA Northern California spokesperson John Treanor said.
So, whether drivers are traveling in or out of state, they should prepare for a delayed ETA.
“Maybe leave a little bit earlier and just anticipate that you're going to show up a little bit, maybe, later than you typically would on a normal day,” Salas said.
With the increased traffic, CHP encourages drivers to be patient so they can have peace on the road and good will toward the other drivers.
