5 people arrested in Spring Valley after suspected human smuggling event

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities arrested five people Monday morning after learning of a suspected human smuggling event near Otay Lakes, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
CBP said around 7:35 a.m., Border Patrol agents assigned to the San Diego Sector were notified of a suspicious vehicle involved in the aforementioned suspected human smuggling event in progress. The incident was reported in the area of Otay Lakes Road.

According to CBP, the suspect vehicle was seen going to an apartment complex on Rosedale Drive in Spring Valley. Then, authorities said several people exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Agents responding to the scene said they heard a noise similar to the sound of a single gunshot after the people left the vehicle.
After doing a search of the area, agents placed five people in custody -- four of them are suspected undocumented migrants and one was a U.S. citizen suspected of driving the vehicle, according to CBP.
Earlier reports said a helicopter was circling over a community in Spring Valley around 8 a.m. Monday following a shooting involving law enforcement, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
As of 4:18 p.m., CBP confirmed no shots were fired during the incident by law enforcement. No injuries were reported.
CBP said a weapon was not found at the scene and whether a gunshot was fired by anyone else is not known at this time. The suspect vehicle has been seized by Border Patrol.
