SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The 2024 Hope on a Plate dinner brought by Feed the Hungry spread Christmas cheer to a jam packed Enmarket Arena Monday night.
There was much more to this year's event than food and toys. Guests were treated to free clothing, haircuts, health screenings and vaccination opportunities.
Rep. Gilliard told News 3 that the event grows exponentially in size each year, and in its 16th year in 2024, this is the largest number of families feed the hungry has fed at Hope on a Plate.
After Feed the Hungry was short 600 toys Friday night, the community pulled through with over 1,000 toys donated by Saturday afternoon to gift nearly 1,400 children.
"Saturday morning, people started coming in from all over Savannah and Chatham County and outside," said State Representative Carl Gilliard (D-162), "And we surpassed that to over a thousand toys, then today we had a 26 ft. truck full of toys, compliments of the United States Marines."
Around 300 volunteers helped out, including U.S. Representative Buddy Carter (R-Georgia District 1).
Families were also treated to star studded entertainment, including a former Harlem Globetrotter from Savannah, Tyrone "Hollywood" Brown, who was also serving food.
"I've always served, even when I was with the Globetrotters," said Brown, "I've served in communities across the county, actually for over 25 years now, so to come home and do the same thing, It's amazing. It's great to see the smiles on everyone's faces."
