RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A fraud suspect thought he'd gotten away with it after showing up to an Española man's home and allegedly taking tens of thousands of dollars by pretending to be law enforcement. However, real deputies put a stop to it on the suspect's second try.

Española resident Jose Lopez is still reeling from the major financial loss where he said a lot of his cash was taken. He hopes his story can prevent this from happening to someone else. Fortunately for Lopez, the suspect accused of taking from him is actually facing charges. Lopez fell into the trap earlier this month after getting a call from a man claiming he was a U.S. Marshal.
"I said okay, well I mean if he's a U.S. Marshall, I guess I thought he was the real thing,” said Lopez.
The suspect claimed Lopez’s social security number was tied to alleged money laundering and Lopez would need to pay more than $70,000 or go to jail.
In person, the suspect collected money from Lopez once. When he tried to do it a second time, deputies were waiting for him. Body camera footage from Dec. 15 shows the arrest of Mahendra Darbar. The Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office said they're now working with other state agencies to see if there are other victims out there or other suspects tied in.
Lopez’s daughter, Amanda Gurule, said she never thought her dad would fall victim to fraud. She's set up a GoFundMe to help her dad. “Our family just wants to be able to move forward from it and let people know to be careful and be checking on family around you,” said Gurule.
The suspect, Darbar is facing charges of fraud and attempted fraud. He also told deputies he was in the U.S. on a student visa and had traveled from Pennsylvania to New Mexico for the crime. Court records show Darbar was released from jail on pre-trial supervision.
