Suffolk apartment complex hit by car breakins

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The spirit of giving can sadly by hijacked by the reality of stealing, with a string of car break-ins at a Suffolk apartment complex reminding residents to lock up their valuables.
A resident at Port 58 said she knew something was wrong at the usually quiet apartment complex when she noticed some suspicious activity outside of her apartment.
"That's super shocking and it makes me want to take better care and lock my doors up," said Port 58 resident Breeanna Harman.
"It was around 2 in the morning and I saw kids running, but I didn't think nothing of it because it was the weekend," said Port 58 resident Jamyah Gosier, "but then I saw police, like two, three cars coming and they had sirens on, so I'm like, 'What's going on? Hold on."
Shattered glass is what remains, and what is supposed to be the happiest time of the year has left many with cars to fix and items to replace.
"Especially if you don't have insurance, especially if you have a deductible that wasn't accounted for in the budget, especially around Christmas time, I feel for those people," Harman said.
One Port 58 resident said she wouldn't pack her car ahead of a trip because she feared it getting broken into.
"We're supposed to be leaving tomorrow and I was asking her, 'Are you going to pack the car up tonight?' And she said, 'No, because the car might get broken into,' and I'm like, 'You're right," Gosier said.
Authorities remind everyone to not leave any valuables or presents in your car, and if you see something strange, say something.
"I am a little bit alarmed that there has been break-ins and I just hope that everyone is safe, and I'll definitely be more alert," Harman said.
If you have any information you are urged to call police.
