According to the Maui Fire Department, Ocean Safety officers and jetski operators had long days manning Maui's beaches, with some remaining on duty until sunset for precautionary purposes. ‘That sealed my fate as the winner,’ Landon McNamara on Eddie Aikau win The weekend incidents began on Friday, Dec. 20 when jet ski operators responded to two rescues on the North Shore and rescued three others in two separate incidents on the Upper Westside. Another two individuals were rescued in the Upper Westside the next day, Saturday, Dec. 21. Crews continued to monitor Kanaha Beach Park, Baldwin Beach Park, D.T. Fleming Beach Park and Hookipa Beach Park until sunset. Sunday, Dec. 22 was Maui Ocean Safety's busiest day yet, rescuing more than ten people. The first 911 call of the day led officials to the North Shore. Upon arrival, officials said the individual had safely made it to shore. Later on that day, eight other individuals were rescued by a D.T. Fleming-based jet ski. Six others were rescued along the coastline between Kaanapali and Kapalua Bay. County officials extended closures for Baldwin Beach Park and Hookipa Beach Park through Monday, Dec. 23 and are monitoring each morning to determine if it is safe to reopen. Large waves breaking on shorelines can knock down people and drag them into the ocean. Being alert and staying well away from the shoreline are crucial to your safety.
