INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis metro police are investigating after several shots were fired inside Castleton Square Mall Monday night, leaving one person injured. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 8:29 p.m. to 6020 E. 82 Street after receiving multiple calls that shots had been fired in the area. IMPD PIO Tommy Thompson said off-duty officers working for Simon Mall properties immediately responded to help mall security contain the incident. Thompson confirmed that multiple shots were fired at the main entrance of the mall near the Kay Jewelers store. Police have not confirmed how many bullet casings detectives have been able to recover while they continue canvassing the scene for evidence. The mall was quickly secured by law enforcement as shoppers were evacuated. Thompson added that a few individuals were also checked by medical personnel on the scene following the evacuation. Thompson initially said no injuries had been reported directly related to the shots fired incident. However, IMPD confirmed shortly after 10:30 p.m. that an adult male had arrived at Eskenazi Hospital with a gunshot wound. At this time, IMPD believes the shooting victim sustained his injury during Monday night's incident at Castleton Square Mall. The victim was last reported to be in stable condition. Preliminary information indicates some type of dispute occurred between two groups before shots were fired, Thompson said. In a post on the social media platform X, IMPD confirmed the public can expect a large police presence for several more hours in the area. IMPD added that all shoppers have been vacated from the mall as detectives continue canvassing the scene for evidence. "IMPD is responding to an incident at Castleton Square Mall," the social media post read. "Shoppers can expect a high police presence near the mall and surrounding parking lots. Updates to come." Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the suspects involved in the shots fired incident. Thompson reassured the public that there was no threat to the surrounding community and that this appears to have been an isolated incident. "We're asking the public to come forward if you have any information. If you were a witness to this incident," Thompson said. "If you possibly know someone who was here and they have information we're asking you to contact us." Thompson said Monday's incident was "not tolerable" as police continue to urge citizens to avoid resolving issues with violence, especially so close to the holidays. "Just think about how traumatic this was for the families. These individuals involved resorted to using gun violence again for their conflict resolution and that does not work," Thompson said. "You see it here and how many families were put at risk and how hard this is for these families, how close it is to the holidays." FOX59/CSB4 spoke with a witness on the scene who described the chaos inside the mall as the shots began to ring out. "I just started running and then I just heard some more shots ring out. Everybody was running and I was darting through the crowd, like I was not playing", Ashland Davis said. David said he was walking past Macy's when he first heard the sound of gunshots. "I was walking past Macy's and they just started shooting and started screaming, and I started running," Davis said. The mall will remain closed for the rest of the evening as police continue investigating. "This cannot continue to happen," Thompson said. "This is not tolerable and we will continue to do our part as the IMPD working with the Marion County Prosecutor's office to locate, find these individuals and bring them to justice because no one should have to go through this." Thompson urged anyone with information to come forward and contact IMPD at 317-327-3475 or CrimeStoppers at 317-262-TIPS. This is a developing story. Check back here for more updates.
