Santa Cruz Wharf partially collapses into Pacific, 3 rescued

SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA — Part of the Santa Cruz municipal wharf collapsed into the ocean on Monday. Three personnel dropped into the ocean, but are now safe and accounted for. Due to construction, the area was closed to the public.
The collapse happened around 12:45 p.m. PT on Monday due to high seas and strong waves. The National Weather Service currently has a High Surf Warning and a Coastal Flood Warning in effect until Christmas Eve.
The Dolphin Restaurant and Restroom #3 were part of the wharf that collapsed.
According to the Santa Cruz Fire Department, “Two victims were rescued by Lifeguard Unit 3166, and one victim self-rescued. There are no reports of significant injuries at this time.”
The municipal wharf will be closed until further notice.
