Blood donations drop during the holidays

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion — and during the holiday season, those donations become even more important.
Hospitals, surgical centers, and emergency rooms rely on about 30,000 units of red blood cells every day to save lives. But between holiday travel, busy schedules, and seasonal illnesses, donations tend to drop significantly from Thanksgiving through the New Year.
“We all get so busy during the holiday season. People are traveling, some are sick, and it leads to fewer donations,” said Tori Robbins, communications manager at Vitalant. “But patients still rely on us every day.”
If you’ve ever been told you’re not eligible to donate, it might be time to check again. Recent changes to FDA guidelines have made it possible for more people to give blood than before.
“A lot of people think they aren’t eligible when they actually are. The FDA changed several guidelines, and we’re seeing people who were once turned away now able to donate again,” Robbins said.
And here’s something else — you don’t need to know your blood type to donate. In fact, donating is one of the easiest ways to find out. After your donation, you’ll typically be notified of your blood type, depending on the policies of the donation center.

While all blood types are needed, O-positive and O-negative are in especially high demand. O-negative is the universal donor, used in emergency situations when there’s no time to match a patient’s blood type. O-positive, the most common blood type, is also one of the most frequently used.
Donating blood takes about one hour from start to finish. The process includes registration, a mini physical, and the donation itself, which takes about 8 to 10 minutes. Afterward, donors are encouraged to rest, have a snack, and make sure they feel well before leaving.
“Even if you’re scared, I promise it’s the easiest way you’ll ever save someone’s life,” Robbins said.
One blood donation can save up to three lives. Often, multiple donors unknowingly come together to save the life of one patient.
Those who donate at Vitalant before January 7th may receive a ’90s-themed blood donor T-shirt or other rewards, depending on location and availability.
To prepare for your donation, stay hydrated in the 48 hours leading up to your appointment and eat a healthy meal beforehand. If you’re feeling nervous, let the staff know — they’re there to help make the experience as smooth as possible.
