(KRON) -- Donald Smith, the owner of Mr. Krispy Professional Barbershop, arrived Saturday morning at his shop in the center of Oakland’s downtown to find major damage to the storefront and the ATM inside missing. His shop was the first of several businesses in the city that were rammed with vehicles that morning in order for burglars to gain entry, according to the Oakland Police Department.
The burglary at Mr. Krispy, located at 1462 High Street, occurred just after 5:30 a.m., authorities said. Multiple people used vehicles to ram the storefront, according to OPD, before gaining entry and taking “several items.” The suspects took off in the vehicles.
Photos shared by the owner show the entire front of the shop rammed in and the interior in complete disarray. Smith told KRON4 his discovery of the damage “was like some sort of scary movie … it was crazy.”

A second similar burglary occurred in the 4200 block of Foothill Boulevard at around 6:15 a.m., OPD said. In that incident, multiple people used vehicles to ram the business and gain entry. The suspects stole several items before fleeing the vehicles.
Just after 6:30 a.m., the third reported burglary occurred in the 40 block of Fourth Street. Multiple people used vehicles to smash the business, Oakland PD said. Arriving officers did not find any suspects during a check of the business but confirmed a burglary occurred.

In the fourth incident, which occurred just before 7 a.m., multiple individuals were attempting to use vehicles to gain entry into a business in the 9700 block of Edes Avenue, according to OPD. An employee at the business then discharged a firearm, police said, causing the suspects to flee. A firearm was recovered from the scene.
Mr. Krispy’s owner said he called Oakland police at around 6 a.m., and officers didn’t arrive until nine hours later. “It shouldn’t have to take for someone to get shot to show up,” Smith told KRON4. “They say it was a priority call, and for them to not show up, I don’t get that.”
The barbershop returned to regular business on Sunday with plywood boarding up the front.

The Oakland Police Department said Monday it has seen a spike in commercial burglaries citywide and is continuing to investigate. Authorities have not confirmed if the incidents are connected.
