Dec 23, 2024
TOPEKA (KSNT) - A former home in Topeka with a long history is up for grabs in the downtown area.
27 News spoke with Mike Morse with Kansas Commercial Real Estate about the historic Dillon House for sale in Topeka. He said the building, located at 404 Southwest Ninth Street, is up for grabs with a purchase price of $2,295,000.
Morse said the old home has been on the market since the spring of 2023. The Dillon House, situated behind The Beacon and across the street from the Kansas Statehouse, has since been converted from its original purpose as a living space and is now being marketed for its capabilities as an event center or office space.

"The challenge with the building is the size," Morse said. "It's a big building. In order to support the price, you have to use it."
The Dillon House has more than 11,500 square feet of space, according to the property listing. Completed in 1913, the three-story building was recently renovated in 2014. Kansas Commercial Real Estate is currently being marketed to lobbyists and legislators for its close proximity to the political heart of Kansas as the second and third floors contain modern office spaces.
"The view of the capital is just stunning," Morse said.
Morse also highlighted the building's unique appearance while speaking with 27 News. The Dillon House became a National Historic Site in 2006 for its social history and architecture, according to the National Park Service (NPS). The Kansas Historical Society (KSHS) lists the architect for the home as Henry Bennet with the style used consisting of Italian Renaissance Revival.
"The woodwork is amazing and the detail is amazing," Morse said. "That's the reason its historic is the craftsmanship throughout is beautiful. The woodwork is gorgeous."

The Dillon House's more prominent characteristics include its many fireplaces, large event spaces, skylights and large staircase. The house also has two large spaces enclosed with glass facing towards the Kansas Statehouse on the first and second floors. Modern amenities, such as kitchen areas and an elevator, can also be found inside.

The KSHS goes on to state the Dillon House as being important due to its connection with a local attorney, businessman and philanthropist named Hirom Price Dillon. The Dillon House is also one of the final significant architectural structures built during the pre-WWI era of Topeka.
"It really is a neat building, it's a special building," Morse said. "We just have to find the next person to love it."
Morse credits Ross Freeman, the former owner of the building, with helping to modernize the former home and take care of it prior to his passing. You can check out the property listing for the Dillon House by clicking here. You can take a virtual tour of the building by clicking here.
