TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting high levels of COVID-19 in wastewater samples in Shawnee County.
Communities can track the presence of the virus that causes COVID-19 through wastewater samples, according to the CDC. When the levels are at 0% it means it's the lowest they've ever seen at the site.
Of the four wastewater sheds that monitor the levels in Shawnee County, three had levels between 60-70% and Sewershed 833 had levels from 80-100%. Sewershed 833 serves a population of 40,000, according to the CDC. The four wastewater sheds serve a total population of 270,000 in Shawnee County.
With all of the wastewater sheds combined, Shawnee County has a virus concentration level of 66.67%, according to the CDC.
