CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP)-- Temperatures on Monday morning were well below zero in many areas across western Massachusetts, increasing the risk for hypothermia and frostbite. This month has seen double the number of cold days compared to warm ones. Extreme cold can be dangerous to humans and pets. Tips to get your house ready for freezing temperatures Hypothermia is a cold weather illness that happens when your body temperature drops rapidly to less than 95°Fahrenheit and cannot produce heat. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, dizziness, stiff muscles, numbness, drowsiness, and confusion. Frostbite is an injury when your skin is exposed to cold weather. According to NOAA, a wind chill of -20° Fahrenheit will cause frostbite in just 30 minutes. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in extremities, such as fingers, toes, ear lobes or the tip of the nose. If you or someone you know may be suffering from either condition, seek medical help immediately. The National Weather Service provides these suggestions for protecting against frostbite and hypothermia: Dress for the cold: Wear layers of loose-fitting and lightweight clothing. Trapped air between the layers will insulate you. If doing strenuous outdoor activities, avoid wearing cotton.  Once wet, cotton takes a long time to dry and will sap your heat. Use synthetic fabrics that wick moisture from your skin and dry quickly. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded. Wear a hat or hood because 40% of your body heat can be lost from your head. It should cover the ears to protect against frostbite. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold. A scarf or ski mask can protect the lips, nose and cheeks from frostbite. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves. Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
