SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - With the extreme cold temperatures we are seeing, your home's plumbing could be compromised. As temperatures continue to drop, the risk of frozen pipes increases. According to the Red Cross, one way to prevent this is to: keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the room. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing Let the cold water drip from the faucet that has exposed pipes If you think your pipes are frozen, Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte explains how you can thaw them out. "You can thaw most easily by bringing the temperature up. If it's a crawlspace or an attic, you know, turn the heat up. There's a heat that you can apply that's available at local hardware stores.," said Piemonte. Piemonte says to turn on your faucet and let warm water run through the pipes and this should thaw the pipe. He adds that you should also make sure to avoid using any kind of open flame to thaw your pipes.
