BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV) — Bluffton Township Fire District (BTFD) firefighters are reminding residents of the dangers of improper electrical use after a total loss fire Sunday night.
Around 11:15 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a camper-style trailer on Little Possum Lane, BTFD said. They found the camper fully engulfed in flames.
An adjacent home was also significantly damaged by the fire, but there were no injuries, and all occupants were able to evacuate safely, officials said.
The camper was a total loss, and BTFD said that fire investigators determined that the fire was likely accidental and caused by an overloaded extension cord. There was a space heater connected to the extension cord.
“This fire serves as an important reminder for our community to take precautions when using extension cords and space heaters,” said Fire Chief Paul Boulware. “We urge everyone to ensure that extension cords are not overloaded and to avoid using them with high-wattage appliances. Taking these simple steps can help prevent fire risks and keep our homes safe.”
Beaufort County EMS and Bluffton Police Department assisted firefighters at the scene, BTFD said.
