COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- Former employees accused in an elder abuse and neglect case involving a Colonial Heights nursing home had their bond conditions modified on Monday.
On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Colonial Heights Police Department arrested several employees at the Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in connection to allegations of elder abuse and neglect reported by the Virginia Department of Adult Protective Services on Oct. 5. The patient who filed the complaint reportedly died on Oct. 29.
A total of 18 employees were named as involved by police. Of those who have since been arrested, four people -- Shakima Brewer of Richmond, Danielle Harris of Disputanta, Shawanda Jeter of Richmond and Kamesha Kittrell -- were charged with felony abuse and neglect resulting in death.
On Monday, Dec. 23, 12 defendants -- all of whom were charged with misdemeanor falsifying patient records -- appeared in Colonial Heights General District Court for arraignment hearings.
According to the Colonial Heights Commonwealth’s Attorney's Office, prosecutors filed a motion to modify the bond conditions set by the magistrate for each defendant. The General District Court judge approved the motion.
The bond modification prohibits all defendants from having any contact with one another and also bans them from the premises of the Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, located at 831 E. Ellerslie Avenue. The defendants are also not allowed to provide medical care to the public in any capacity while the cases are pending.
The 12 defendants who appeared in court on Monday are scheduled for an adjudicatory hearing in general district court on March 26, 2025.
