Providence opens warming centers as Rhode Islanders brave cold temps
Dec 23, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — While Monday saw plenty of sunshine, the heat didn't quite match the temperatures outside.
The pedestrian bridge in Providence, which is usually bustling, appeared noticeably empty, other than a few Rhode Islanders braving the frigid weather.
Jeff Mehring, who regularly walks his dogs along the bridge, was among them. He told 12 News nothing keeps them indoors, not even sub-zero temperatures.
HOLIDAY TRAVEL: What to know before you hit the road
"My dad taught me there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothes," Mehring said.
Meanwhile, Providence's outdoor ice rink officially opened Monday, drawing in dozens who prioritized outdoor fun over the cold. For some kids on winter break, it was their first time stepping foot on the ice.
Bundled up shoppers also popped in and out of stores throughout the capital city to finish up some last-minute holiday shopping.
"I mean family comes first," Providence resident Liam Flanders said. "I've got to get Christmas gifts for my dad."
WEATHER NOW: Light snow showers expected late Monday into Tuesday
"I've got my gloves and good company," Sarah Flanders added. "It's winter time. We can brave it."
The capital city is encouraging everyone, especially the vulnerable populations, to stay indoors and is offering public warming spaces for those seeking shelter from the cold.
"Both community libraries in Providence and Providence Public Library are open as warming spaces," Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said. "In addition, emergency service providers like Crossroads and Emmanuel House Rescue Mission are in special status and won't turn people away."
