In a moment, Chesapeake family loses everything in fire

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — “You feel like your world is coming to an end in a moment."
That's what Shelby Hall said, reflecting on the moment she learned her Chesapeake house was destroyed as the result of a fire. She and Jai Johnson are to be married next September.
Dog dies, family of two displaced in Chesapeake house fire
The before photos of a beautiful home filled with Christmas decorations and warmth and stunning beauty now look like a bombed out building.
They've lost so much, but the biggest loss of all — “Well, the dog, yes, that was the big one,” Johnson said.
Yes, no doubt the big loss is their beloved 130-pound Schnauzer, 1-year-old Winston, who Hall said never knew a stranger. There was also a tree ornament of the loveable Winston, who was perfectly trained and a graduate of pet training.
“Winston was really, like, the core of our house," Johnson said. "It really tied us all together, and our family and her family that he was. He was the one dog that, in a sense, irreplaceable. You are never going to find anyone like him."
Said Johnson about Winston: “He was so happy all the time, and that was the hardest part of everything because you can buy everything else back, but you cannot find another dog like that."
Chesapeake Fire has not determined what started the fire.
The two were hoping for a perfect little Christmas, their second one in the house, but it was not to be.
“It was my dream to buy a house," Hall said. "We were young, and so we both worked so hard to get our house together, and we would save money and go buy what we needed, whatever it was, piece by piece at a time, and so a lot of hard work, a lot of fond memories,:
They both agreed on the lesson learned from the fire.
“I think one lesson, and I was just telling him: I will never take anything for granted again — never," Hall said. "Like, Friday morning we woke up with everything, and by the time we went to bed we had lost everything and had nothing."
Said Johnson: “Every night you sleep in your own bed. Just take it in. The feeling you have. This is my blanket this is my pillow. This is our house, and now it’s gone.”
