MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Thirty-eight fire trucks worked for hours to put out a large strip mall fire at Scooters Plus early Monday morning on Summer Avenue and Highland.
Firefighters say they responded to the fire in Highland Heights on 3415 Summer Avenue just before 3:50 a.m. MFD says all 38 fire trucks worked for five hours to put out the fire.
All lanes were blocked on Summer Avenue, Highland, and National Street as the fire crew directed traffic to North Holmes Road.

Businesses nearby had to evacuate and families began to leave out of their homes due to the smoke coming over into the neighborhood.
“The smoke from the fire from the Scooter is actually entering to the building where I work and I spoke to the police officer and he told us it’s unsafe for us to be in that building because there are lithium batteries that are burning. So, I am trying to get a plan together with my boss to see what the evacuation plan is,” said Dujour Towns, U.S. Postal Service Office worker.
At this time, it is still unclear what caused the fire.
“It’s a mixed-use commercial building. So, there are several businesses in this one complex," said Qwanesha Ward, Public Information Officer. “There were a few challenges that our firefighters had. We did have the wind that played a factor inside of that. And then you know, also those scooters electrical devices as well l as those lithium batteries.”

Towns says he hates to see another building become vacant while they are trying to redevelop the area.
“To just see it here, and now we have vacancies. It’s going to be burned, you know, just the outside — it’s not what we wanted in this area,” he said.
No injuries were reported, but this is still an ongoing investigation.
This comes after a fire on Southern Avenue near Patterson Street just before 10 p.m. on Sunday.
