Wisconsin DOJ investigates officerinvolved shooting in Chippewa County

LAFAYETTE, Wis. (WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is leading an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Saturday evening in the town of Lafayette.
According to a release, deputies from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic abuse incident shortly after 11:30 p.m. The subject fled the scene in a vehicle before law enforcement arrived.

Deputies later located the subject and attempted a traffic stop as part of the investigation. The subject fled, eventually crashing near County Highway K and 50th Avenue.
After the crash, the subject allegedly fired a weapon at law enforcement, striking at least one squad car. The Eau Claire Regional SWAT Team was called to assist, and upon their arrival, the subject continued shooting, reportedly hitting an armored vehicle.
Two SWAT members returned fire, hitting the subject. Despite life-saving efforts by law enforcement and emergency medical services, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.
Per standard policy, the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave.

DCI is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved officers are cooperating fully.
The DCI will turn over its findings to the Chippewa County District Attorney's Office for review upon completion of the investigation. No additional details have been released.
