Folly Beach prepares for New Year's Eve celebrations

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) - Folly Beach is preparing for its New Year's Eve celebrations, which will look slightly different than years past.
The city welcomes back the 14th annual Flip Flop Drop to ring in 2025. However, the fireworks will not be returning as the Folly Beach Association of Business chose a drone show for this year. Officials expect over 4,000 people to turn out for the event as it is also a major economic driver for the city.
"It means everything. We started it, so it's very important to us and it's awfully good for the city. It's the biggest moneymaker we have any one night. You can't find a room anywhere around to rent, the restaurants are full, bars are full, and it's a big thing," Charlotte Goodwin, co-founder of Flip Flop Drop, said. "We started it, Ken and myself, and so we think it's a very big thing. It's important to us, important to the city."
The drone show will be similar in length the past fireworks display, estimated around 15 minutes, though it will begin at 7 p.m. allowing for more attendees of all ages. Officials encourage viewers to set up at the Lost Dog Cafe for the best view, but it will be visible from Center Street down to Tides Folly Beach.
"We will be launching about 250 drones up into the sky. It's going to be about 15 to 17 slides with kind of seaside images, landmarks that are really close to Folly's heart, things like that and it's going to be set to music. It should be fun. Just a little bit of a change," said Kelly Travers, events coordinator of Folly Association of Business.
One of the reasons for the change includes the maintenance of Folly Beach and keeping the area cleaner.
With one of the biggest crowds the city has in a day, the Folly Beach Police Department said they are ready.
"We're starting a traffic unit and we'll have two traffic officers designated for DUI enforcement which will be on New Year's Eve," Sgt. Zachary Halpern, public information officer of Folly Beach Public Safety, said. "We emphasize if you need a ride there are very, very many options. There's rideshares, there's Uber, and there's friends you can call."
Officials will close Center Street at 10 p.m. to allow for pedestrian safety and set up for the Flip Flop Drop. Additionally, police said they will not ticket anyone who needs to leave their vehicle overnight on Dec. 31.
