Keeping the peace with family during the holidays
Dec 23, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The holidays bring joy and laughter, but they can also stir up tension within family dynamics.
Differing opinions can shed light on unresolved conflicts between family members.
Sean Collinson, America's Mediator and TV Judge on Civil Justice, shares some of his expert advice.
Collinson has years of experience helping families clear up disputes to find common ground, and his strategies can help make sure gatherings are harmony-filled.
"How you handle family dynamics during the holidays can set the tone for long-term relationships and even marital happiness," he explained.
Despite lower overdose deaths, fentanyl threat still lingers
The first thing he suggests is to know when to take a breather, since a little space can go a long way. He said it's okay to take a step back for a moment to reset.
Another suggestion is to redirect negative energy. When someone makes a sharp comment, smile and respond with a neutral phrase. It will not only diffuse the situation but will allow the time to address concerns privately later.
A third tip is to set boundaries to protect peace. Knowing your limits is essential, so if things get too crazy, try to carve out some time to do something that will help you relax and recharge.
The final thing people can do is make sure to include their in-laws, as they appreciate that. Ask about holiday traditions beforehand and try to incorporate one while celebrating.
"Focusing on shared moments of joy can turn challenges into opportunities for deeper understanding," Collinson concluded.
