4MyCiTy announced the grand opening of its first-ever Zero Waste Facility in Baltimore City. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to environmental sustainability and combating food insecurity, with a mission of “From Zero Waste to Zero Hunger”: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transforming waste into resources the community can use.The new 4MyCiTy facility will house the nation’s largest indoor composter, capable of processing up to 6,000 pounds of food waste into certified usable soil within 24 hours. An outdoor composter handles an additional 4,000 pounds. Combined, this technology enables the facility to turn around 10,000 pounds of food waste into nutrient-rich soil per day.“Launching this Zero Waste Facility allows us to address the critical issue of food waste while taking actionable steps to create a sustainable and food-secure future for the families across Maryland,” said Christopher Dipnarine, Founder of 4MyCiTy. “With the nation’s largest indoor composter, we will significantly reduce organic waste and greenhouse gas emissions, transforming waste into valuable resources for our community.”Since its founding in 2018, 4MyCiTy has diverted 270 million pounds of organic waste from landfills, equivalent to approximately 60,891 passenger vehicles driven for one year or 281,314 metric tons of harmful CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) avoided, according to the press release announcing the grand opening. The facility’s process “rescues” surplus food from local farms, distributors, and partners, and redistributes it to Maryland families who need it. If the food cannot be consumed, it goes through the composting process becoming soil in just 24 hours. That nutrient-rich soil is then distributed to local farms and community gardens, returning valuable resources to the environment. The Zero Waste Facility is also home to the 4MyCiTy U! Job Training and Mentoring Program, equipping youth aged 16-23 with hands-on experience in sustainability, waste management, and environmental stewardship. The 4MyCity Zero Waste Facility is located at 1133 Wilso Drive, Baltimore, MD.
