Toys for Tots giveaway at Kern County Fairgrounds

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program in Kern County has been gathering toys for underprivileged children as they have every year since 1947. Finally, those toys were given away Sunday at an event at the Kern County Fairgrounds.
The event was a culmination of three months of work gathering donations all for this giveaway. And the program says it's bigger now than ever before.
"I think every year we've gone up at least by 5,000 kids," said Kern County Toys for Tots coordinator Darlene Doughty. "We're up to the 50,000 kid mark right now."
50,000 kids just like Ayden Cervantes, who got caught trying to sneak an early peek at the Christmas presents in the bag.
"I like to open presents and celebrate," said the 7 year old.
It's not just the kids celebrating. The parents are too. Quinnay Davis is a mother of six who says costs are overwhelming. This helps her make sure she still has Christmas gifts to give her children.
"Different types of toys… got a basketball, some headsets. Little doll for my daughter, she's been wanting it," said Davis as she looks through her bag. "It means a lot, because around this time, sometimes it's hard. We have bills that overpower and overtake, so it means a lot that we can come and get at least something for our kids."
Doughty knows firsthand what that means to parents and kids alike. When she was a little girl, her parents got her a gift thanks to Toys for Tots.
A gift she still remembers.
"I was 7 years old," she said. "It was a stuffed animal, a bear." And now fuels a desire to make sure every kid can have the same feeling she did when she found a stuffed teddy bear on Christmas morning.
"This is the reason to do it," said Doughty. "To make sure that the toys get out to the families that need them and make sure that everyone gets a very Merry Christmas."
